The Stihl 08 S was made between 1965 and 1995. The 08S (or 08 Super) was introduced in 1965 and the engine was increased in 1969 (to 56 cubic centimeters from 48). There is also an electrical version, the 08SE. At 18.5 pounds, the 08S is not a light chain saw, but it was very popular in the 1960s. This was before Stihl opened their Virginia plant in the United States and their popularity exploded.

If the engine has no spark or a dramatic, sudden loss in power, the problem could lie in the ignition system. The ignition system ignites the fuel in the engine for proper combustion. When the spark isn’t firing correctly, an influx of gas can bog the engine down or cause it to not start at all.

The carburettor on a Stihl 08s chainsaw pipes a mixture of two-stroke oil and fuel into the engine. Over time the fuel mixture, along with dirt and detritus finds its way past the air filter, which can cause a gummy sticky deposit which eventually affects the correct function of the Stihl 08s saw carburettor. Over time it could cause engine damage if not cleaned. This is a fairly easy and cost effective way to repair the saw by cleaning out the carburettor on the Stihl 08s chainsaw

Adjustment of the high speed adjusting screw(H) affects the power output but also the maximum off-load engine speed. If the setting is too lean (screw turned too far clockwise), the maximum permissible engine speed will be exceeded. This can cause engine damage, brought about by lack of lubrication and overheating. The engines maximum permissible rpm must not be exceeded! Note that even slight alterations on the adjusting screws have a considerable effect on the carburettor running behaviour.
