The Stihl 034 chainsaw was introduced in 1984 and was made until 2003. It was affected by Stihl’s product range re branding and it became the Stihl MS 340 in 2002, although it only stayed in production for another year. It is very similar in performance to the 036 but tends to be less expensive. It is quite heavy weighing in at 5,5 kg and is described as being a mid range professional saw.

Engine Idles Rough or Dies While Idling

Readjust the “LA” or idle screw if the chainsaw does not idle. Next adjust the “L” speed screw to accommodate the “LA” screw adjustment. Remove, disassemble and clean the carburetor parts.

Clean out the carburetor jet bores thoroughly if the engine still stalls while idling. Blow out each valve and replace the filters for each one. Clean or replace the valve jet if idling problems persist. If an idling problem, acceleration or dropping load problems persists you may have an air leak either on the carburetor or on the engine assembly.

Connect the removed and reassembled Stihl carburetor to a suitable pressure gauge. Submerge the carburetor in fuel and pump up the pressure to 11.60 psi. Next check the needle, if the pressure drops, the carburetor has an air leak. If you can’t find the air leak on the carburetor, you will may need to replace the saw carburetor.
